What is a single tooth dental implant and how does it work?

Over the next two to six months, the bone grows around it and locks it in place, much like a natural tooth root. Who can’t have a dental implant?
It mostly comes down to the state of your jawbone. If your bone density isn’t quite there yet, a bone graft may be needed first — your implant surgeon will check this at your initial consultation, usually with a high-resolution CT scan that maps the area in three dimensions.
Implants are a commitment to your oral health going forward, so good brushing habits at home and regular check-ups and cleans matter just as much afterwards as they did before.

Is there a limit to how many teeth I can replace with implants?
No — implants can replace a full arch of teeth, or even both arches. You don’t need one implant per missing tooth to do this; a small number of implants can support a full bridge or denture across the whole arch.
Implant-Retained Dentures — All-on-4® and All-on-6®
If you’re replacing a full arch, implant-retained dentures are worth considering. The All-on-4® or All-on-6® method uses just 4 or 6 implants to anchor a full set of replacement teeth across the top or bottom row, keeping your jawbone stimulated and your smile secure.

How long do dental implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, implants can last a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years of normal wear, but the titanium implant itself is designed to be permanent.
Is the dental implant procedure painful?
The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during placement. Some soreness and swelling afterwards is normal for a few days and usually manages well with over-the-counter pain relief.
Do you accept NHS patients for dental implants?
Dental implants are a private treatment and aren’t offered on the NHS at Pinner Green Dental. Finance is available through Medenta if you’d like to spread the cost, and our Dental Plan members receive a discount on lab-based treatment.
What if I need a bone graft before my implant?
If your CT scan shows insufficient bone density, we’ll discuss a bone graft first — this gives the implant a stronger foundation. It adds time to the overall process, but your implant surgeon will walk you through exactly what’s needed at your consultation.
How soon after losing a tooth can I get an implant?
Sometimes an implant can be placed the same day a tooth is removed; other times it’s better to let the site heal for a few months first. Your implant surgeon will advise which route suits your case at your consultation.
Will my implant look and feel like a real tooth?
Yes — once the crown is fitted, most patients say it feels and functions like a natural tooth within a few weeks. You brush, floss and eat with it exactly as you would your own teeth.
